Warthog (Phacochoerus aethopicus) The main characteristics of the Warthog are the warts, of which a boar has two pairs and a sow only one pair. The Warthog digs for roots and bulbs with its snout, when the ground is soft and with its tusks in harder ground. They also preferable graze on short grass. The picture on the left shows an old sow. |

Boars can weigh up to 80kg while sows only reach 55kg. Their tusks are also used as weapons and are very sharp on the edges. The average litter is about three to four young ones, but can vary from two to eight. They can stay up to three years with their mother. They love to wallow in the mud as the picture shows. |

Suricate (Suricata suricatta) Suricates are familymembers of the mongoose and very distant relatives of cats. A typical posture is seen on the photo on the left, when they are watching out for enemies or catching the first sunrays on a cold wintermorning. Their diet consists of insects, wild fruit, eggs and reptiles. They can also catch poisonous snakes. Suricates live in colonies up to 30 animals. |
